Exeter - Newton Abbot via Dawlish Warren
Situated on the South West Coastal Path, Dawlish Warren has a wealth of opportunities for walking. Amble along the marked trails through the nature conservation area, an internationally important site for the protection of birds, insects and plants. Take a 2 mile stroll along to Dawlish where you'll see our famous black swans swimming in the brook which runs through the center of town, cascading over a series of waterfalls.
If you feel energetic, carry on to Teignmouth along the sea wall. You might be lucky enough to see seals and possibly dolphins on the way! Head off in the opposite direction and you'll pass the magnificent Powderham Castle grounds and some lovely waterside inns on your way along the Exe Estuary.
Just a few minutes level walk away is the superb safe beach at Dawlish Warren. Regularly selected as one of the top resorts in the UK, this huge beach is flying the European Blue Flag again as well as winning the ENCAMS Resort Seaside Award for 2006. Dawlish Warren is also recommended by the Marine Conservation Society and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the abundance of bird life and over 600 different species of flowering plants. The beach and surrounding areas are ideal for children to have fun both in and out of the water. During the main season lifeguards are on hand to watch over them. There is a large grassed play area where you can enjoy a picnic and there are children's amusements, cafes and shops all safely away from the road. Dogs are permitted on selected areas of the beach.
Just a 30 minute drive away is Torquay with its myriad of beautiful beaches and sheltered coves and a little further, Paignton and Brixham, more picturesque seaside towns which make up the popular "English Riviera".
Traveling in the opposite direction, again only about 30 minutes away, you'll find the historic city of Exeter, where you can visit the beautiful cathedral or perhaps indulge in some retail therapy in the town center where you'll find a good selection of high street Shops. Sorry no dogs allowed
